the xx

5 Feb

Screen Shot 2014-02-05 at 6.03.03 AMDon’t fret, this isn’t a dirty post; I’m short an x. I am actually doing a rare thing here: sharing a band on the blog. I don’t often do this, since music is often of such personal taste, it’s hard to be 100% confident that people will also enjoy it. The XX has been around since 2009 so they may be old news to some, but just the other night was my first listen to their self-titled album. Unexpectedly, this record helped me unearth some ideas that have been trapped inside my brain for far too long. With thoughts finally surfaced, and fully recorded, I now have 3 new pages in the sketchbook! They are mostly a flurry of lists and quick sketches, but I have a feeling that they may very well dictate the new direction of my work this year. Amazing how good music can help you accomplish something quickly, even if it’s as simple of a task as cleaning the kitchen!Follow my blog with Bloglovin

wrapping things to unwrap ideas

24 Dec

drawingsnthings1I have been trying to unlock my creative mind’s eye for the past couple months, and as you may remember from my last post, inspiration had been fleeing from me.¬†This is the first year in the past three, that I decided to not participate in Art House’s Sketchbook Project so, I lacked that yearly catalyst which often helps me get to creating and producing after that tiring slump that always follows my holiday shows. I am happy to say that a present came early for me this year as I finally unwrapped some of my ideas last night. Ironically, it was right after I wrapped up a new journal. Perhaps all it took was starting with something “crafty” that didn’t require a fabulous outcome. I mean how hard is it to coat a cover in glue then stick some brown paper onto it? drawingsnthings2 drawingsnthings3That simple action of just making got me going, and all of a sudden I was in a creative mood, turning to blank pages, grabbing from piles of collected ephemera, diving into paints to mix specific hues, etc… the discovery of material was a definite stimulus. I forgot how much fun it is to just “play,” and before I knew it my first two page spread was complete. It is my hope that this new bound book will become a frequent creative vehicle for me in the new year that will foster the documentation of thoughts. Did you wrap or unwrap something today that inspired you? (Christmas pun intended).

spring sketchbook snaps

6 May

Last week consisted of a lot of spring cleaning, but it also yielded tons of much needed creativity. Because of this, my sketchbooks saw a lot of love. I’ve been trying to just doodle and sketch more, as I tend to over work a lot of drawings due to my obsession with detail and texture. Simplifying my illustrations has been fun.Screen Shot 2013-05-06 at 12.11.43 PM Although of course, I can’t stay away from meticulously drawing animals, and so a few more excessive renderings have started to emerge. Screen Shot 2013-05-06 at 12.12.36 PMSome new pieces in my ongoing collaborative sketchbooks with Anika Starmer, Patterns & Paws, have started to come together. Stoked to finally have a bit of time to devote to these beauties so I can mail them back to Maryland soon. Screen Shot 2013-05-06 at 12.12.02 PMWhat have you been drawing in your sketchbook?
