making mail

1 Feb

mailartjan20142Sometimes it’s good to just make something, anything really,  just to get your hands busy again: touching paper, holding pens, channeling ideas… perhaps this is why I always turn to mail art when I’m yearning to create but am too pensive to settle on an idea. Mail art is accessible because there really are no rules, apart from having to write legible addresses and attach proper postage, the activity is basically open-ended. Screen Shot 2014-02-01 at 10.28.06 AMIt felt good to get a giant mess going on my drafting table. I find this to be a catalyst that is highly motivating: art supplies strewn every which way (ready for you at any moments notice) allowing you to just cut, glue, draw, paint, etc, without much premeditation. Colors, patterns and text emerge together, creating a cohesive little greeting. In a way, I believe these thoughtfully crafted letters sometimes can echo the creativity of a little painting, filled with details, depth, attention and tone. mailartjan2014Sealing a dozen envelopes and sticking stamps to plenty of postcards allowed me to feel at ease with my current creative mind-state. Putting something together with my two paws is always satisfying. What’s even better though is knowing that these little bits of paper I’ve scribbled on will soon make many of my friends smile.

full basket and full heart

Well this past week has been a flurry of awesomeness, challenge, excitement and inspiration. Thank you to everyone who read my Etsy Featured Shop interview, and for all of your kind comments all over social media.20130914-101907.jpgEvery day this week, when riding to the post office, my gold bike basket was chock full of orders from the shop, while my heart was full of happiness, love and pride. It is so exciting to have the reach of your brand grow! Dozens of animal lovers who just stumbled upon my shop are now making room in their nests for some of my hand made creatures.20130914-101922.jpgIf you’d like to have a lovely parcel covered in vintage stamps to arrive in your mailbox, why not treat yourself? Thanks once again to those who recently purchased from me; your animals are traveling swiftly towards you. Gratitude is also directed at all my lovely friends on social media with their kind words, love and support; your interest and encouragement are always fuel for my creative fire!

hello patterns & paws

28 Jun

Long time blog readers will be excited today, as I am sharing more progress from the collaborative sketchboooks that I’ve been creating for a while now with my talented friend Anika Starmer (the envelope below contained my recent additions). patternsandpaws1Several years ago, we embarked on an exciting project together, and haven’t looked back since. The basis of patterns & paws was spawned from the fact that Anika loves patterns and I love paws; we just decided to draw in sketchbooks together. We create diptychs, where Anika draws on the left pages while I draw on the right, and we also work on pieces together, overlapping our imagery on two page spreads. If you would like to see the evolution of the project be sure to check out these six previous posts (in chronological order):  1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Below are my latest additions to the books: the first three photos capture my responses to Anika’s most recent patterns, while the last three show the new pages I created for Anika to draw upon. patternsandpaws2 patternsandpaws3 patternsandpaws4 patternsandpaws7 patternsandpaws5 patternsandpaws6Let Anika and I know what you think of our collaborative books; commments and thoughts are always appreciated!
