nature’s positive ways

My mother usually listens to the CBC radio, and yesterday they were interviewing psychologists about the positive effects of nature and how spending more time outdoors is very beneficial to both our bodies and minds. The funny part is, I never really needed someone with a fancy science degree to tell me that being outdoors makes you automatically happier… I know this because I live it. There are so many structured and mechanical things that are an automatic part of our everyday society, it makes sense that the animals within us would seek the solace of open air. The openness of the wilderness provides clarity and calm, birds and small creatures like squirrels remind of the beauty in simplicity, while breathing fresh air and releasing endorphins while you walk, literally boosts the brain’s chemistry. So what are you waiting for? Stop reading this, and get outside for a bit of refreshment, invigoration and happiness! (above are some of the places I’ve recently been recharging).

open air studio

I spent the weekend down by the river again, except this time I brought my traveling typewriter. Sometimes you don’t need a big oak desk or a fancy studio space in order to get creative. When I first purchased my vintage typewriter a couple years ago, I was particularly intrigued by the fantastic travel case it came with, so taking this beautiful piece of machinery to the water’s edge wasn’t as difficult as it seems. typewritingriverside2 typewritingriverside1I’ve been doing better with my pen pal replies by keeping things simple with only meaningful letters, decorated envelopes, and vintage postage; I find writing back is less cumbersome if I do it this way. I am excited to send these little letters off! I plan to include a small print of one of the above photographs in each reply. I look forward to writing letters on some of my future summer outings… perhaps I’ll hike to a mountaintop and write there. On your next outdoor adventure, try bringing a task you need to accomplish, because surprisingly the great outdoors can also make a wonderful office.

too good tuesday #9

28 May

This edition of too good tuesday is being taken over completely by one event; the best bike ride of the year (so far)! Sunday Funday yielded some fantastic sunny weather and marked the first meet up for the kootenay cruiser gang. 5 friends and myself loaded up our beauties and took a short drive to South Slocan to ride the rail trails. IMG_4515 IMG_4506 IMG_4496 IMG_4511 IMG_4509Everyday I seem to be reminded that I live in paradise; cruising literally 10 feet from a gorgeous river, falling upon lush green marshlands, and looking up to views of mountain peaks. This right here is why I ride a bike, and why I’m friends with nature.

What’s been too good to you lately?
