the house finch

19 May

Over the past half decade I have really taken a liking to bird watching. I find it to be a fascinating hobby; one that would definitely take years to master, as there are just so many beautiful birds with ample variations. Not only are they gorgeous creatures to watch, but they are also a great source of inspiration for my artwork. Serious bird-watching started in 100 Mile House where you may remember a few cuties like red-polls and chipping sparrows from post these: frequent winter visitors, the birds are back and chipping sparrow.  When we first moved to Castlegar, there was a short one year hiatus of feathered friends, as we lived in a basement suite… we really missed having the outdoor space, as well as the company of birds and their songs, so moving to our own little house, with a gorgeous front yard, allowed me to hang a feeder again. IMG_8149We have a great variety of fliers come to visit our “restaurant,” but one of my favorites so far is the house finch: bright red highlights, speckled stomach, deep browns on his back, and that fantastic prominent beak! I painted a tiny little portrait of one a few weeks ago, but had yet to share my results here with you here on the blog, so here he is. He was all hand-drawn with graphite, painted with acrylics and then finished with ink on a one inch deep 4×4 wood panel. spring sketchbook snaps

6 May

Last week consisted of a lot of spring cleaning, but it also yielded tons of much needed creativity. Because of this, my sketchbooks saw a lot of love. I’ve been trying to just doodle and sketch more, as I tend to over work a lot of drawings due to my obsession with detail and texture. Simplifying my illustrations has been fun.Screen Shot 2013-05-06 at 12.11.43 PM Although of course, I can’t stay away from meticulously drawing animals, and so a few more excessive renderings have started to emerge. Screen Shot 2013-05-06 at 12.12.36 PMSome new pieces in my ongoing collaborative sketchbooks with Anika Starmer, Patterns & Paws, have started to come together. Stoked to finally have a bit of time to devote to these beauties so I can mail them back to Maryland soon. Screen Shot 2013-05-06 at 12.12.02 PMWhat have you been drawing in your sketchbook?

hand-printed owls

13 Jan

Screen Shot 2013-01-13 at 11.53.14 AMA couple people added my old wolf etsy treasury to their favorites list this morning, and it made me realize that it’s been a while since I’d curated a little list of cute handmade critters. I have been daydreaming of the printmaking I will do this year, and thus got looking at hand-pulled prints of animals… one thing led to another and before I knew it, I had 10 owl prints open in different tabs. Naturally a treasury was born; to our feathered friend, the owl, and the printmakers who illustrate them.
