the xx

5 Feb

Screen Shot 2014-02-05 at 6.03.03 AMDon’t fret, this isn’t a dirty post; I’m short an x. I am actually doing a rare thing here: sharing a band on the blog. I don’t often do this, since music is often of such personal taste, it’s hard to be 100% confident that people will also enjoy it. The XX has been around since 2009 so they may be old news to some, but just the other night was my first listen to their self-titled album. Unexpectedly, this record helped me unearth some ideas that have been trapped inside my brain for far too long. With thoughts finally surfaced, and fully recorded, I now have 3 new pages in the sketchbook! They are mostly a flurry of lists and quick sketches, but I have a feeling that they may very well dictate the new direction of my work this year. Amazing how good music can help you accomplish something quickly, even if it’s as simple of a task as cleaning the kitchen!Follow my blog with Bloglovin

wrapping things to unwrap ideas

24 Dec

drawingsnthings1I have been trying to unlock my creative mind’s eye for the past couple months, and as you may remember from my last post, inspiration had been fleeing from me. This is the first year in the past three, that I decided to not participate in Art House’s Sketchbook Project so, I lacked that yearly catalyst which often helps me get to creating and producing after that tiring slump that always follows my holiday shows. I am happy to say that a present came early for me this year as I finally unwrapped some of my ideas last night. Ironically, it was right after I wrapped up a new journal. Perhaps all it took was starting with something “crafty” that didn’t require a fabulous outcome. I mean how hard is it to coat a cover in glue then stick some brown paper onto it? drawingsnthings2 drawingsnthings3That simple action of just making got me going, and all of a sudden I was in a creative mood, turning to blank pages, grabbing from piles of collected ephemera, diving into paints to mix specific hues, etc… the discovery of material was a definite stimulus. I forgot how much fun it is to just “play,” and before I knew it my first two page spread was complete. It is my hope that this new bound book will become a frequent creative vehicle for me in the new year that will foster the documentation of thoughts. Did you wrap or unwrap something today that inspired you? (Christmas pun intended).

hello patterns & paws

28 Jun

Long time blog readers will be excited today, as I am sharing more progress from the collaborative sketchboooks that I’ve been creating for a while now with my talented friend Anika Starmer (the envelope below contained my recent additions). patternsandpaws1Several years ago, we embarked on an exciting project together, and haven’t looked back since. The basis of patterns & paws was spawned from the fact that Anika loves patterns and I love paws; we just decided to draw in sketchbooks together. We create diptychs, where Anika draws on the left pages while I draw on the right, and we also work on pieces together, overlapping our imagery on two page spreads. If you would like to see the evolution of the project be sure to check out these six previous posts (in chronological order):  1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Below are my latest additions to the books: the first three photos capture my responses to Anika’s most recent patterns, while the last three show the new pages I created for Anika to draw upon. patternsandpaws2 patternsandpaws3 patternsandpaws4 patternsandpaws7 patternsandpaws5 patternsandpaws6Let Anika and I know what you think of our collaborative books; commments and thoughts are always appreciated!
