Screen Shot 2015-04-02 at 11.53.55 AMThe best online marketplace for handmade, Etsy, partnered up with an innovative social network, Ten Thousand Coffees, to graciously award a Maker $5,000 to fund their creative business, product, or idea. I was beyond giddy this week when I found out that Nature’s My Friend was short-listed into the top 20 for the Maker’s Grant! If I was lucky enough to win, this money would help me finally outfit the studio with an etching press! All I need now to make this dream a reality, is a little help from you my friends. I need you to vote for my project; all you need is an e-mail address or a facebook account and you only need to vote once.

the north

IMG_0037 IMG_0047Last month I had the immense privileged of traveling to the North West Territories for a week to participate in an artist’s symposium. Aurora Arts Society graciously invited me to be a part of their week-long creative event known as Art’s Week. Screen Shot 2014-10-23 at 9.17.19 AMIMG_9926I instructed a simple workshop on altered books, gave a little artist’s talk about my practice and how to set up your own shop on Etsy, and was also part of a panel of talented artists and business people who spoke about marketing yourself and your work. Rubbing elbows with “my people” and spending a week fully immersed in creative activity was such a well needed burst of wind in my sails. 1932396_10152577737167326_7481493611128818483_nSpending a lot of time with one of my dearest friends, Marcus, from my BFA days at ACAD, was the true highlight though. It was so wonderful to see his daily life first hand, meet the wonderful folks he calls friends, and see why the North has stolen his heart.IMG_9963 IMG_0051IMG_9941 Driving through the forests in Kyle’s Jeep, searching for roadkill to use in Marc’s practice, digging around for treasures at the dump, and watching the aurora dance in the night sky were some of the best parts of my adventure. I felt truly blessed to have seen the North amidst a change in season; the landscape was absolutely alive with color. IMG_9952IMG_9933 IMG_9924I am incredibly grateful to have been presented with such an amazing artistic opportunity, not to mention the trip of a lifetime. Thank you so much to Aurora Arts Society, Marcus Jackson, and all of the Northerners who I had the absolute pleasure of meeting!

a moose – open & closed

scoopinmoose3 scoopinmoose1My talented and long time friend (since I was 6!) miss Jessica Mayne runs a fabulous ice cream shop and creperie in Canmore, Alberta with her beau Tory. The store is adorably named “The Scoopin’ Moose,” has bright green walls, and is adorned with some fabulous moose friends. I was massively flattered when the two approached me with an exciting commission that not only would beautify their shop, but would also be a functional tool; an OPEN / CLOSED sign that would feature an alert moose on one side and a sleepy guy on the other. Originally we were talking about just a simple drawing that could be photocopied, but I really wanted them to have the real deal! So, we decided on a gorgeous hand-painted wood panel that not only represents the true hand-made quality of their products, but also the down-to-earth essence of their lovingly owned and operated business. scoopinmoose4scoopinmoose7 scoopinmoose5scoopinmoose6There were a few hiccups along the way, including an unexpected move, but all-in-all I think both parties feel that the finished product was worth the wait! I was so excited to hand-deliver the sign to them this week; what a thrill to connect with long-time friends and fantastic clients and also see the place where your artwork will live. scoopinmoos2I’m looking forward to seeing snapshots of the sign hung in it’s proper place, and I’ll be sure to share them with you.  What do you think of this new one of a kind piece? Isn’t it fantastic when friendship, business and art truly collide?
