chasing inspiration

13 Dec

The drawings included in this post are rare new images that have come to fruition over the last few months. I realize that it has been a good while since I have hunkered down and churned out a solid body of new artwork. It has also been quite sometime since I have blogged consistently. Perhaps this is because smaller creative outlets, like instagram, facebook or twitter, are super accessible and are easy to consistently contribute to since only tiny tidbits of information need to be shared. When creating a new series of work or writing a fresh blog post, it is a far more elaborate way to exemplify my ideas; I tend to only want to write, draw or design if I am confident in my concept or thought, and that elaborating on it is worth both my time as well as my audience’s… Perhaps this is why I have been quiet on here lately? Screen Shot 2013-12-13 at 9.32.17 AMAdmittedly, the change in season often gets to me. As much as I love the magic of a snow covered mountainside forest, I can’t help but yearn for the hot, bright and long days of summer. I even end up clinging to the lingering warmth, bursts of sunshine and the vibrant colors of the fall. Something about winter just changes me. The loss of light and heat that come with winter are usually ambition deterrents for anyone who prefers warmer days, and on a personal note, less time spent outside with nature, my muse, is especially disheartening in the colder months. Much like a bear getting ready for winter, I feel uncomfortable in the snow until I find a proper way to “hibernate.” Life had also been so hectic the past couple months (having prepared and traveled for two big shows in both Edmonton and Vancouver) that coming home to a cozy little house, spending time with people I love, and falling into a slow routine, has encouraged my slow, sleepy and recluse state. I can tell I am getting closer to finding my cave and comfort zone. Screen Shot 2013-12-13 at 9.32.32 AMThe burst of stamina that the New Year will bring in a few weeks is something I am coveting, and until then I will be soaking up the joy that always comes naturally with the holiday season. I know that this collected energy will power some new creative adventures and I can’t wait to share them with you. Until my next post, I wanted to link you to a few articles that I read recently on inspiration: The Guardian article directly quotes artists, composers, architects, etc about harnessing their inspiration, while the other good read is from an adorable little blog that lists many obvious (yet often forgotten) things that aid in directing our creativity and visions.
