organized to the max

8 Sep

My art trip this summer was fabulous – a nice getaway, good chance to catch up with friends, and tons of WORK WORK WORK. I feel like the month since I’ve gotten home, has just disappeared. With all of the unpacking, jewelry-making, blogging, catching up on endless mail art, John’s amazing engagement proposal, visits from the glorious Justice Bicycle and one of our favoritest friends, Aaron Cronk, time flew right by. Apart from the above accomplished activites, I feel as though I haven’t been in the studio making as much as I would like to be, and part of this was because my studio space was just a bloody mess: recently unpacked workshop materials, piles, books & paper left everywhere from June, unsorted supplies scattered about the desk and a living room that was starting to become an extension of my creative area… all in all, not good. A major re-organization was on my horizon… part of the dilemma was mis-use of space. The first thing I did that made all the difference, was getting my drafting table pulled off the wall in order to make the potential storage that existed underneath it, accessible. Now all of my reference magazines, mail art stationery & recycling bin are easy to get at. This also made the corner cupboard easier to get at, and lined up all of my drawers, shelves and storage units next to my bookshelf’s existing position. The faux post office barely moved. Still sitting pretty next to all of my office supplies, markers, and below it are varnishes, paints, crayons, adhesives & other art supplies. Directly behind the desk and above the other supply storage shelves & drawers, is my ever growing wall of inspiration, which is finally full of fabulous reference images, work by people I admire & am friends with, and small collected trinkets that sit on a newly exposed little ledge. I think I’ll do a feature post on this wall one day and take closer pictures, talk about specific artists and include more descriptions. Finally, a re-organized bookshelf… something that needs to be done every 3 months or so, as books get pulled out and put back improperly, or just become stacked piles somewhere on my desk or in my bedroom. A sorted bookshelf is not only more pleasing to the eye, but makes it so much easier to find the volume you are looking for. Comparing how my space looked when I first moved in, to how it is now, you can see a world of a difference!!! Amazing how much a studio can evolve with a bit of time. Now that I’m all organized, it seems somewhat strange to have everything in it’s place and NOTHING on my desk. I’m not sure I’ve ever even seen that much square footage of my table top before. So I guess all that remains to be done is to make a GIANT CREATIVE MESS in this lovely organized space. Off I go…

AWESOME…..I love organising and changing my bedroom around. ‘THE WALL OF EPICNESS’ is fandabbydosey. And I saw one of my drawings just below that amazing goat drawing. It is a goat…right??? You should definitely do a blog post on your wall and do the close ups.

I always feel better & more creative when my space is clean and organized. My little desk becomes so cluttered and stacked, I find myself working in a tiny 8×8 space and have less and less desire to work. Once it’s clear I can’t wait to plan a new project. This also subsequently messes the place up again, but it’s all good. :-) Happy to see a few of my items on your inspiration wall. :D

Looks great, Jessica! I don’t think my little workplace is ever “organized” just a bit less messy. I know where everything is and I kind of like it that way. I LOVE your wall and would love to hear more about it. My bulletin board is sort of like that and is full, too. We must be surrounded by inspiration! Oh I love the faux post office as well. Cool!

I’m working on organizing my workspace after unpacking as well, although mine is filled with less exciting things like business textbooks, dictionaries, and misc. office supplies! Thank goodness I have some little birdies to keep me company and brighten up my desk :D

Looks good! I changed my studio up a little too…a new bookshelf…and a tiny black and white TV to keep me company when I am to messy to come to the computer…

Holy Moly- that before pic looks like my studio!! This was quite inspiring-perhaps I’ll finish the started-&-never-finished cleaning I began a few weeks back. (thank you!!) And I would love to learn more about your Wall Of Fame! Something to look forward to :)
