another mail post from yours truly

25 Apr

Seems like every time I make a mail art blog post, it only takes a few days until I have a pile of envelopes sitting on my desk and it’s time do another! This post features mail coming from and going to nine very rad and creative people. The talented Australian carver Chantal Vincent (aka @chantal_vincent) decided she wanted to get in on the mail art fun and I told her I’d be happy to send something special down under for her. Chantal has always been supportive of my printmaking and often “digitally drools” over my not-yet-purchasable items that I’m currently making for my etsy shop. One that tickled her fancy was my first ever gocco print a pair of paws, so it was a no brainer to make that the gem of the envelope. I am looking forward to her reply, not to mention an upcomping trade the two of us are currently doing (stamps for prints). The letter I sent to my beloved sister Ali Martin (aka @mrsalimartin) took its sweet time, but finally arrived before the Easter weekend. I made her a mixed media piece featuring a peacock, and also sent along my mountains of fur zine, a filigree deer note card a one of a kind button and a bunch of little stickers and found objects.  The fantastic @ezerd often does giveaways with super fun themes, so I find it hard not to participate. Surprisingly I have been amazingly lucky since submitting! I recently won her Message Me a Secret contest, because my secrets are the best, so a t-shirt is coming in the mail for me, WHATAWIN. Plus I got this fantastic moustached robot print due to an honorable mention from her haiku contest. I wrote a poem of robotic lust:                      Hunk of curved metal/ Technologic pile of smarts/ Let me rust your bolts Speaking of ezerd, she got a mail art package from me this past week that was sealed in a gocco printed filigree deer envelope. She said my packages are always so funny; must be all the obscure obscure found objects… what’s the matter ezerd? Not interested in purchasing a powerful 1973 snowmobile? One of my newest, not to mention uber talented, mail art friends Rhya Tamasauskas (aka @rhyat) sent the most adorable little envelope. My jaw was seriously on the floor as I riffled through this right pile of goodies. Rhya’s calling them ‘dioramas’ as all of the little objects can be placed anyway you like in order to create a scene. She has already made a bird set and an owl set that are also just way too adorable. I hope to be the proud owner of another very soon!!!! Oh, and a couple of these cute little hand-drawn bears will be finding a home on my studio wall for sure! Diane Tanner (aka @deer_oh_dear), spoiled me with our first exchange. I actually picked up the envelope one morning when John and I decided to go out for breakfast. It was really fun to open this bad boy up and discover all of the goodies while we waited for our eggs. Such a generous, awesome package, I don’t even know where to start… I will say however, that the royal family portrait postcard and the Hedwig memorial portrait are both just too good. Bravo Diane, bravo. Jessica Mack‘s (aka brownpaperbunny) third envelope arrived! She better not send more until she receives the package I sent last week. However, I am always happy to find mail, and if Jessica wants to keep endlessly sending, then send away! This recent envelope featured her fashion illustrated note paper, another bunny stamp card (this time in green) and yet another amazing color zine, all about a poster glue recipe. Three zine trades trickled in and the first was from miss Hollie Mcmanus (aka @hollie_jane) who gifted me a copy of a book all about Honeybees! I love collecting zines, they are just such fabulous little entities. I may have also initiated an external trade, as I mentioned to Hollie that Jeannine Saylor LOVES bees and they’re now tweeting.@Studio_Tau can now rest easy, for her gorgeous hand-made collage postcard finally arrived last week! She was concerned as all these other trades were arriving and hers was slow to make it. I live in a very small town of only 2,000, and so I think envelopes take a while to both leave and come to me. However it is a beautiful collage piece that combines both human, animal and natural imagery… well worth the wait. Last, but of course not least is @Surface_22 who sent me some goodies all of the way from Singapore: three photographic postcards (one of which features light graffiti) and a print of one of her latest chalk drawings for an upcoming show. Wow, what a mail art haul, eh?

I don’t run a public mail art list, however I take a lot of time and effort to link back to artist websites and twitters. If you are interested in trading with any of my existing mail art friends, I encourage you to contact them via these links and initiate your own trades.
I am very much looking forward to the package!!! Thanks!

The snowmobile cracked me up. I stared at it shaking my head and giggling for a while. It’s now hanging in the studio. I’m getting me one of those 1973 snowmobiles next time I think I’m up for some time traveling… Your tee should be there any day now!!! Yay!!!

Safe and sound and it doesn’t even look scuffed! I guess I am, by nature, a worrier. :) Glad it was unwarranted.

Can’t wait to keep the exchange going.

Another beautiful bounty of mail art! I’m so happy you hooked me up with Hollie and excited to exchange art with her.

I’m about to send off a package to Michelle Ashton (mizhenka) as well. You’ve done a lot of good, spreading the mail art love around and connecting other artist. I think a lot of good karma is coming your way.

    • naturesmyfriend 26/04/2011 at 15:23 #

Well I’ll take it more any day and add it to the good karma I already own, my pretty electra cruiser. oh how I love my bike. shes so pretty.

Glad to help other artists connect, create and exchange. Art is about expressing and sharing your ideas with others. Mail art epitomizes this.
